Sketches of Emotion
Intergenerational workshop project at the intersection of dance and visual arts.
NL/ENG
Sketches of Emotion is an interdisciplinary workshop project by Belgian visual artist Karen Hendrickx and Belgian dancer and choreographer Justine Copette, in which dance and visual art merge into a universal language of expression and connection. During the workshop, we explore the interaction between dance and visual arts in children, young people, and adults, inviting participants to switch off their thinking and create purely from their inner intuition. Through specific exercises, we invite them to connect with each other in a non-verbal way, learning to use their whole body during the creative process. The body is a very important instrument for expressing yourself; you can make your mark by rolling, laughing, moving the air, and finding your place by reinventing the space. In this way, we want to create an intergenerational and intercultural dialogue that helps people from different generations and cultures to talk to each other. The experience builds trust, gives more creative freedom, and gives us the opportunity to experience together the unity between two languages that are usually considered separate.
Objectives:
- Learning to work intuitively, switching off the mind
- Focusing on the creative process and making representation secondary
- Gaining more confidence in our bodies as a means of communication
- Exploring the connection between the expressive qualities of body movements and the expressive qualities of drawing.
- Paying attention to physical sensations, movements, and internal experiences.
- Developing the ability to participate in group activities
- Gaining confidence in oneself and others and learning to appreciate differences.
- Stimulating critical thinking and aesthetic sensibility
- Learning to interact with each other in a nonverbal way and expressing different emotions in a positive way.
The concept of the workshop(s) allows people of different ages to create together. Children and adults and/or parents/grandparents with (grand)children can participate together. The intergenerational aspect makes the project unique. No experience is required—everyone can take part regardless of prior knowledge

Short workshop or workshop series
These workshops focus on play and expression. We learn to draw from movement and use our bodies as brushes. It is a journey of discovery into identity and expression—with the body as an instrument and the imagination as a guide.
Duration: 1 session - 3 hours
Co-creative performance process
Through various workshops, we work towards a co-creative performance. The participants become co-creators and provide the material for the performance themselves. The end result is a performance entirely supported by the participants. During the performance, we work with live music.
Duration: 3–6 months (3–4 hours per workshop)
